The National Mall’s iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become the latest stage for political triumph, technological innovation, and a clash over national heritage. President Donald Trump and his Interior Department are proudly declaring an “America 250” victory after successfully clearing the historic 6.75 million-gallon pool of a persistent and unsightly algae problem. Taking to Truth Social, Trump shared vibrant photos of the crystal-clear water reflecting the Washington Monument under bright blue skies. He used the moment to celebrate a pristine national landmark while simultaneously issuing a “Wanted”-style appeal to the public, sharing a U.S. Park Police notice to help identify a vandal suspected of destroying government property at the site.

The dramatic transformation of the water is being credited to a cutting-edge scientific solution. According to Greg Wischer, founder of Dei Gratia Minerals and Interior’s deputy assistant secretary for land and minerals management, “advanced nanobubbler technology” was deployed to effectively eradicate the algae bloom. In a memorandum addressed to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Trump, Wischer noted that the technology conquered a recurring nuisance that has plagued every single reopening of the Lincoln Reflecting Pool since its inauguration in 1922. The successful treatment marks a major technological milestone for the National Park Service as the country gears up for its semiquincentennial celebrations.

With the algae neutralized, the National Park Service maintenance crews have transitioned to the final phases of cleanup. Maintenance workers are currently vacuuming up the dead organic matter resting on the floor of the monument. In a colorful and highly partisan memorandum shared by the President, Wischer compared the sunken debris to “the destroyed Iranian Navy resting on the bottom of the Persian Gulf.” The memo detailed that the vacuuming process is already well underway near the Lincoln Memorial, revealing the pool’s striking, custom-engineered “American Flag Blue” bottom coating. The entire maintenance operation is projected to be fully complete within just a few days.

The restoration success has also served as a political lightning rod, with the Trump administration using the achievement to contrast itself with its predecessors. The Interior Department’s official communications explicitly called out former President Barack Obama’s administration, asserting that previous leadership had repeatedly failed to manage the pool’s water quality, resulting in murky waters and massive clumps of floating algae. In a celebratory tone, the memo poked fun at critical media outlets, claiming that the newly restored “American Flag Blue” water is so brilliantly clear that “the Fake News Media, which has been staked out at the Reflecting Pool for weeks, has fled!”

Beneath the triumphant celebrations, however, lies an ongoing battle against political vandalism and physical damage. Appearing on ABC’s This Week, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum addressed the security challenges facing the landmark, which has recently been targeted by anti-Trump activists and vandals. While the pool suffered “multiple gashes that add up to 350 feet” along its liner, Burgum expressed optimism about the recovery efforts. He suggested that maintenance teams might avoid having to drain all 6.75 million gallons of water, as the sloped geometry of the pool may allow for a partial drainage to quickly patch the damaged edges.

Ultimately, federal officials are framing the pool’s restoration as a resilient symbol of national unity ahead of America’s 250th anniversary. Dismissing critics who have focused on the mounting financial costs of the constant refurbishments, Burgum pointed the finger squarely at the destructive actions of a small dissenting group. He noted that while the Reflecting Pool had gone decades without facing such deliberate destruction, the government remains undeterred. Confident that the park’s extensive security camera network will help bring the perpetrators to justice, Burgum emphasized that the vast majority of the American public is ready to look past the political division and celebrate the historic milestone.
