For anyone who counts themselves as a true cinephile, the coastal Basque city of San Sebastián has always held a legendary status, largely thanks to its world-famous annual film festival. Now, there is a brand-new, deeply evocative reason to book a flight to this Spanish cultural haven: the chance to sleep inside a beautifully resurrected piece of cinematic history. The Palacio Bellas Artes, a magnificent 1914 Beaux Arts masterpiece that once housed one of Spain’s very first movie theaters, has been lovingly reimagined and transformed into an elegant, 81-room boutique hotel. Through a meticulous restoration process led by the visionary architect Ignacio Quemada, the building’s historic facade has been polished back to its original grandeur, and its iconic, crowning dome has been completely reconstructed to dominate the city skyline once again, bridging the gap between San Sebastián’s golden past and its vibrant present.

This ambitious historical rescue mission was executed under the banner of the Curio Collection by Hilton, a brand known for preserving the unique souls of local landmarks rather than modernizing them. According to Jenna Hackett, senior vice president and global category leader of lifestyle brand management at Hilton, the hotel is designed to be a living, breathing celebration of the city’s rich cultural identity, seamlessly weaving together cinematic heritage, artistic interior design, and timeless Basque gastronomy. Rather than tearing down the old theater to maximize space, the design team chose to honor the building’s original layout, creating an immersive, theatrical journey for visitors from the absolute moment they arrive. Guests do not merely walk into a lobby; they physically enter the hotel by stepping through what was once the theater’s original stage, passing directly underneath the historic proscenium arch to check in, seamlessly transforming every traveler into the protagonist of their own Spanish holiday.

The property cleverly functions as a half-hotel, half-art gallery, carefully curated to ensure that the spirit of the silver screen is felt in every quiet corner. To achieve this, the hotel commissioned the celebrated Basque artist Lander Andonegi to create a site-specific collection of 81 unique pieces of art—one for each guest room—each capturing different eras, textures, and moods of cinema history. This dedication to theatrical storytelling extends directly to the room categories themselves, which are playfully named after theater seating zones; guests can book stays in the “gallery,” “amphitheater,” or “grand stalls” rooms, or opt for the ultimate luxury of the “front” and “corner box” suites. Every room serves as a private sanctuary where old-world Spanish elegance meets the sleek comforts of modern hospitality, making it feel less like a standard hotel stay and more like a backstage pass to a bygone golden age of European filmmaking.

No journey to the Basque Country is complete without indulging in its legendary culinary scene, and the hotel’s flagship restaurant, Lotu, is poised to become a major destination in its own right. Occupying the theater’s former seating box and spanning two beautifully designed floors, the restaurant’s name means “to tie” or “to connect” in the Basque language. This moniker is a deliberate tribute to the bustling, grand dining rooms of the early 20th century, which served as vibrant social hubs where actors, screenwriters, directors, and artists would gather late into the night to debate art and share ideas. The kitchen is helmed by the renowned chef Andoni Luis Aduriz, who has crafted a menu that beautifully balances classic European comfort with bold, local Basque flavors. Diners can expect legendary continental classics like rich pâté en croûte and delicate sole meunière, alongside cherished regional favorites like txangurro donostiarra (stuffed Basque spider crab) and perfectly grilled chuleta beef steaks, ensuring that the hotel’s sensory experience is just as unforgettable on the plate as it is on the screen.
