The tragic loss of 18-year-old Nolan Wells over the Fourth of July holiday has left a Mississippi community grieving and searching for answers. What was meant to be a festive day of celebration with friends on Horn Island quickly devolved into a terrifying ordeal, according to newly released audio and GPS data. The holiday took a dark turn at around 4:00 p.m. when the group’s vessel, carrying roughly seven young people, began taking on water. Desperate audio recordings capture the immediate panic of the situation, with the operator urgently calling for assistance as their bilge pump failed, leaving them stranded and vulnerable on the water.

In the frantic distress call, the boat’s operator can be heard pleading for help, stating, “Hey, we’re at the west tip of Horn, and our bilge pump stopped working. We’re going. We’re sinking. Can you all please come? I want to get this boat unsank and towed back.” The raw fear in the voice of the operator encapsulates the sudden and overwhelming danger the young group faced as they watched their vessel slowly submerge, miles away from the safety of the mainland.

According to tracking data obtained by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the waterlogged boat was eventually towed for approximately three miles before regaining enough functionality to travel at a normal speed less than an hour later. The vessel finally arrived back at its original mainland departure point at 5:44 p.m. However, amid the chaos of the sinking ship, the towing process, and the frantic journey back, Nolan Wells was somehow left behind, missing from the group during the return trip.

The desperate search for the teenager ended in heartbreak two days later. On July 6th, emergency officials discovered Wells’ body in the water, just off the shore on the northwest end of Horn Island. The devastating discovery confirmed the worst fears of his family and friends, transforming a routine holiday outing into an unimaginable tragedy. The newly released audio and GPS timelines have only intensified the grief and questions surrounding his final moments and how he became separated from his friends during the crisis.
