The advances in analyzing tiny, degraded, or contaminated DNA samples—exactly the kind used to decode Jefferson’s hair—made that match possible. In California, the Golden State Killer, Joseph DeAngelo, was identified through a different but related tool: genetic genealogy, which uses public DNA databases and family trees to find relatives of the person who left a sample at a crime scene. Scientists had essentially learned how to read the faint biological traces that people leave behind, whether in a strand of hair two centuries old or in the crust of a slice of pizza. Beth Shapiro, an expert in ancient DNA at the University of California, Santa Cruz, put it plainly: “It’s hard to say we ever would have gotten to this place, where all these tools were used to convict the Gilgo Beach serial killer, if it hadn’t been for starting this project.” It is a remarkable chain of influence. A research team trying to understand a Founding Father’s private life developed a tool kit that now helps bring closure to cold cases, comfort to grieving families, and justice to communities that had almost given up hope. The same science that can awaken old ghosts can also put old demons to rest.
Yet the project has not been a smooth or universally celebrated triumph. The involvement of living descendants is intimate and sometimes painful, and science can reopen wounds as easily as it closes them. This month, a Hemings descendant who had provided a DNA sample in 2015 asked to withdraw her participation. Her frustration centered on timing and procedure: Kurin’s book, written for the general public, was appearing before a related article had undergone peer review and been published in a scientific journal. For her, that felt like a violation of the careful, respectful process that should govern research on human remains and family histories. The Smithsonian confirmed that her sample and related data were destroyed, and the analysis was rerun without her. The decision is a reminder that every DNA sample comes from a person with their own concerns, memories, and sense of agency. Even descendants who want the truth may disagree about how it should be revealed, who should tell it, and what obligations researchers have to the living before they use genetic material for a public story. Consent is not a single signature; it is an ongoing relationship. And when a project lasts fifteen years, the people who agreed to participate at the beginning may feel very differently by the end. The controversy does not necessarily undermine the scientific conclusion, but it complicates the story. It shows that the search for historical truth is never just about facts. For the living descendants, the new confirmation carries a weight that no statistic can fully capture.
