A three-year-old girl has drowned at a popular reservoir in California as a haunting photo showed the raft she was believed to have been playing on.
Lailah Rosillo, from Modesto, passed away at Don Pedro Reservoir in Tuolumne County last weekend, officials said.
On Saturday at 3:34 p.m., the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a missing child who may have drowned in Fleming Meadows Lagoon at the reservoir.
The reservoir, which is close to Yosemite National Park, is also known as Lake Don Pedro.
More people also called 911 to report a 3-year-old girl from Modesto was found and that CPR was being administered, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
The office’s boat patrol, which was already in the area, tried CPR until fire and medical personnel showed up and continued to try and save the child’s life. But the child didn’t respond and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The girl was identified as Rosillo in a GoFundMe connected to the incident. The fundraiser, which is meant to support her family, has a goal of raising $12,000. Close to $9,000 has already been raised.
Yolanda Muro, a family friend who started the fund, said that the money will go to help cover Rosillo’s funeral and memorial expenses.
“What was meant to be a joyful family camping trip became an unimaginable nightmare that no parent, sibling or grandparent should ever have to endure,” Muro said in the GoFundMe.
Muro described Rosillo as “a bright, beautiful little girl whose smile brought happiness to everyone around her.”
“She was deeply loved by her family and leaves behind an older brother, an older sister, and a baby brother, all of whom miss her beyond words,” Muro added.
The lagoon at Fleming Meadows Recreation Area is near a picnic area and is a 2-acre swimming area with a sand bottom. The reservoir, created in 1971, holds 2 million acre-feet of water.
