If you rely on TripAdvisor’s artificial intelligence to plan your next getaway, you might want to double-check its work. A recent investigation has revealed that the platform’s AI-generated review summaries have a habit of looking at destinations through rose-colored glasses, often glossing over serious issues like food poisoning, unsanitary conditions, and even sexual harassment. Instead of warning travelers, the chatbot has been caught spinning glowing, overly optimistic narratives about hotels and resorts that actually have a trail of nightmare reviews left by real guests.

One of the most alarming examples of this digital sugarcoating occurred with the Riu Palace Santa Maria in Cape Verde. While TripAdvisor’s AI enthusiastically praised the resort’s “spotless” rooms and claimed its restaurants were earning “rave reviews,” actual guests painted a vastly different, stomach-churning picture. Travelers warned of raw chicken being served, flies and birds swarming the buffet tables, and one person outright declaring that the resort “will destroy holidays.” Despite the operator defending its high sanitary standards, the AI’s refusal to acknowledge these glaring red flags has sparked widespread concern among consumer advocates.

The issues run even deeper than unhygienic buffets. At a resort in Turkey, the AI praised the “friendly” staff and relegated serious guest allegations of repeated sexual harassment to minor, vague “lapses” noted by a few. Travel experts warning against relying on these automated assistants advise tourists to scroll past the polished AI summaries and dig directly into the raw, one-star guest reviews. TripAdvisor has stated it is reviewing these discrepancies and refining its system, noting that AI is meant to complement—not replace—real reviews, and that it has safety blocks in place to suppress summaries for properties with reports of severe incidents like death or assault.

This controversy arrives at a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming the travel agent of choice for younger generations. Recent surveys show that Gen Z and Millennial travelers are leading the charge, frequently utilizing AI tools to compare flights, choose destinations, and build entire daily itineraries from scratch. In contrast, older generations like Baby Boomers remain highly skeptical, with the vast majority choosing to steer entirely clear of technology when mapping out their vacations.

However, as many tech-dependent travelers are finding out the hard way, AI is still a highly unreliable co-pilot. In one viral incident, an influencer couple’s dream vacation to Puerto Rico fell apart at the airport because ChatGPT mistakenly assured them they did not need any additional travel documentation. In reality, they required an ESTA authorization, a detail the chatbot missed, causing them to miss their flight entirely.

These cautionary tales serve as a crucial reminder of the limitations of modern technology. While chatbots and automated summaries are incredibly convenient for brainstorming and quick research, they lack human judgment and the ability to verify critical safety and logistical details. Until these systems become truly dependable, the smartest move for any traveler is to treat AI as a helpful rough draft and do their own old-fashioned detective work before booking.
