What began as a highly anticipated cinematic collaboration on the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel It Ends With Us has unfortunately spiraled into an exhausting, multi-million-dollar courtroom battle. The latest chapter in this ongoing Hollywood feud centers heavily on a staggering financial dispute. Recently, attorneys representing the director and star Justin Baldoni filed a fierce opposition against his co-star Blake Lively’s eye-popping demand for approximately $8 million in legal fees. This massive bill was accumulated during their high-profile litigation, which only recently reached a tentative settlement. Baldoni’s legal team, led by Ellyn S. Garofalo and Bryan Freedman, aggressively urged the court to deny the request in its entirety. They argued that Lively has utterly failed to present any credible evidence showing that such an exorbitant sum is even remotely reasonable or justified under the circumstances.

To put this astronomical $8 million demand into perspective, Baldoni’s defense team pointed out the extreme disparity between Lively’s request and prior rulings in related litigation. They noted that when the New York Times successfully sought to dismiss the exact same defamation claims brought by Baldoni—who had originally sued the publication for $250 million over allegations of a smear campaign—the newspaper requested just over $181,000 in fees. By contrast, Lively’s legal team is demanding $8,035,040.88 to resolve a single defamation claim at the early pleading stage. In a scathing court motion, Baldoni’s lawyers blasted the “excessive” billing practices of Lively’s representation, which accounted for a jaw-dropping 7,070.20 billable hours spread across no fewer than 82 individual legal timekeepers. The defense highlighted instances of multiple lawyers attending the same hearings, endless internal strategy conferences, and over-the-top online investigations, arguing that the bill was heavily padded and should be thrown out or drastically reduced by Judge Lewis J. Liman.

The roots of this bitter legal warfare trace back to December 2024, when Lively shocked the industry by suing Baldoni, accusing her co-star and director of sexual harassment and orchestrating a calculated public smear campaign against her. Baldoni vehemently denied all accusations of misconduct and quickly filed a retaliatory defamation countersuit. Though Baldoni’s initial countersuit was ultimately thrown out of court in June 2025, the legal battle triggered an extensive and highly invasive discovery process. To the fascination and dismay of the public, this phase led to the court-ordered release of private text messages from an array of A-list celebrities, including superstar Taylor Swift, Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds, co-star Jenny Slate, and Oscar-winner Ben Affleck, exposing the deep fractures and immense pressure behind the scenes of the production.

With a highly publicized trial looming on the horizon for May, both sides managed to temporarily de-escalate the public drama by releasing a joint statement on May 4, announcing a settlement of their broader legal disputes. In the statement, both Lively and Baldoni expressed pride in the final cut of It Ends With Us and reaffirmed their shared commitment to raising awareness for domestic violence survivors. Crucially, however, the joint statement acknowledged that the filmmaking process had presented severe challenges and explicitly noted that the concerns raised by Lively deserved to be heard. They expressed a mutual desire to foster workplaces free of toxicity, hoping the settlement would finally bring closure, peace, and a respectful environment online for everyone involved.

Despite the peaceful rhetoric of their joint spring announcement, the financial aftermath of the lawsuit has proven to be incredibly contentious. On June 12, Judge Liman ruled that Baldoni was legally obligated to pay Lively’s defense fees under a protective 2023 California statute designed to prevent powerful figures from using retaliatory defamation lawsuits to silence accusers of sexual abuse. Armed with this ruling, Lively’s attorneys quickly demanded over $7.4 million in pure attorney fees and more than $539,000 in litigation expenses. Lively’s camp celebrated the judge’s decision as a historic milestone, publicly declaring that the ruling sent a clear message to anyone attempting to use the legal system as a weapon of intimidation. They emphasized that the precedent would protect future victims who courageously stand up and speak their truth in the entertainment industry.

As the court prepares to decide if Baldoni will indeed be forced to write an $8 million check, both actors are attempting to heal from the immense emotional toll of the public scandal. Speaking out just days before his lawyers filed their opposition, Justin Baldoni, alongside his wife Emily, shared a deeply vulnerable video message with his followers on social media. Moving away from the harsh legal jargon of the courtroom, Baldoni reflected on the non-linear path of recovering from trauma, expressing profound gratitude for the family, friends, and fans who supported them when they felt voiceless. While the legal machinery continues to grind on, the human cost of this Hollywood fallout remains painfully visible, leaving fans to wonder if true closure is even possible after such a public and bruising battle.
