In 2013, Pope Francis,age 76, became the eleventh pope by election after having previously been elected as a Jesuit on February 11, 1984, as the first Jesuit to be elected to the papacy. Born in Argentina on February 12, 1947, and a native of Buenos Aires, he joined the Society of Jesus at 21 and ordained a priest two days before his 33rd birthday, nearing the status of a bishop. Francis was consecrated as an auxiliary bishop and later became the Bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992.

During his papacy, Francis demonstrated a reverential and atmospheric style, often articulating deep theological reflections regarding the nature of faith, the Holy Spirit, continuity and disclosure. He has canonized nearly 1,100 people, many of whom are not yet悟egers, including notable figures such as St. Junipero Serra, Pope John Paul II, and Pope David twoidlere on the topic of the death penalty.
