To bring this dream to life, Renkert co-founded Barkie, a Bellingham, Washington-based startup building an AI-powered golf assistant that lives right in a player’s pocket or on their wrist. The company’s name itself is a nod to golf culture, referring to the gritty, hard-fought par saved after a tee shot dramatically ricochets off a tree. To build the sophisticated technology required, Renkert teamed up in 2025 with co-founder Zubin Wadia, an MIT graduate and his former colleague at the AI startup Docugami. Together, they designed a system that leverages standard wearable gear—like an Apple Watch or AirPods—to replace manual typing with a seamless voice user interface. Instead of tapping through tedious menus to record a score, a golfer can simply speak naturally to their device after completing a hole, allowing the app’s background system to update their digital scorecard automatically.

What truly sets Barkie apart from other sports tech startups is its unique, patent-pending dual-layer engineering system designed to prevent the software from making errors or “hallucinating” numbers. The front-facing interface relies on a guardrailed Large Language Model (LLM) that handles natural, conversational dialogue, allowing players to chat with the app as if talking to a human caddie, ask for rules clarifications, or even trade friendly banter. Behind this conversational layer sits a rigid, rules-based engineering backend that accurately calculates scores, figures out strokes-gained analytics, and manages complex betting math. By separating natural language processing from the hard mathematics of the game, Barkie ensures that while the user experience remains relaxed and conversational, the actual scorekeeping and financial tabs are completely bulletproof and mathematically precise.

Beyond its breakthrough voice features, Barkie solves one of the most frustrating postseason rituals for recreational golfers: sorting out side bets on the final green. Through its specialized betting engine, the app instantly calculates and settles popular real-money side games like Nassau, skins, wolf, and hammer bets right as the final putt drops, eliminating the usual post-round arguments over who owes what. For players who still prefer the physical tradition of a paper card, Barkie offers “ScoreShot,” a feature that allows users to snap a photo of their physical scorecard. The app’s AI immediately digitizes the image and pushes the data directly to the USGA’s official GHIN handicap system. Thanks to a strategic partnership, the software automatically cross-references local course details like slope ratings and tee boxes, enabling players to obtain an official gravity-defying handicap and review granular, hole-by-hole performance trends they cannot find anywhere else.

This bold vision has quickly gained momentum, attracting significant seed funding from friends, family, and high-profile angel investors who see massive potential in Barkie’s disruptive approach. Among its notable supporters is entrepreneur and legendary collector Rob Gough—famous for his record-breaking $5.2 million purchase of a rare 1952 Mickey Mantle baseball card and his early investment in Jeff Bezos’ AI venture, Prometheus. Gough invested in Barkie because he recognized the power of pairing a scratch-golfer founder who intimately understands the game’s nuances with an elite, world-class AI engineering team recruited from tech powerhouses like Meta, Google, and NASA. Further bolstering the startup’s leadership and athletic pedigree is former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu, who serves as an active advisor to the company, helping guide its growth strategy.

Barkie is currently available for download on both iOS and Android platforms, offering a free tier with GPS mapping along with a premium subscription that unlocks hands-free voice tracking, advanced analytics, and the betting engine. Although building the company has temporarily cost Renkert his own quiet time on the fairways—even leading to a rough showing at his recent U.S. Amateur qualifying attempt—he remains completely undeterred and intensely focused on the long game. Armed with elite backing and a transformative product, Renkert is not hiding his ambition to completely dethrone the industry’s established giants, viewing this venture as the defining masterpiece of his career. By successfully merging cutting-edge conversational artificial intelligence with the timeless, quiet spirit of golf, Barkie is poised to permanently change how golfers track their progress, wager with friends, and enjoy the sport they love.
