The company is exploring ways to make device boxing more compact, allowing more products to fit on a single pallet. This maximizes space utilization during shipping, reducing the number of shipments required and consequently lowering transportation emissions. Additionally, Amazon is increasingly prioritizing ocean freight over air transport for final assembly shipments. Ocean shipping, while slower, has a considerably lower carbon footprint than air freight, contributing significantly to emission reduction.

Since 2015, the company has reduced the average per-shipment packaging weight by an impressive 43% and avoided over 3 million metric tons of packaging. Earlier this year, Amazon eliminated plastic air pillows from its global fulfillment centers, avoiding the use of approximately 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.
