The quiet of a midnight neighborhood in Pineville, North Carolina, was shattered by an unimaginable act of violence that has left a family devastated and a community mourning. Early Thursday morning, officers rushed to the Sabal Point Apartments following a frantic 911 call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon. Inside the home, police discovered a five-year-old boy suffering from multiple severe stab wounds. Deciding that there was no time to wait for an ambulance, heroic officers immediately began life-saving measures, cradling the critically injured child in a patrol car as they sped to a local hospital. Tragically, despite the desperate efforts of medical staff, the young boy was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, his life cut heartbreakingly short.

Investigators soon learned that the nightmare had unfolded in a place where a child should feel safest: his own bedroom. According to a harrowing arrest affidavit, the boy’s mother and another child were inside the apartment when her ex-boyfriend, 31-year-old Jehaaz-Akil Khaliq Echoles, allegedly kicked down the front door. Once inside, Echoles reportedly stormed into his young son’s bedroom and firmly shut the door behind him. Hearing a sudden, terrifying struggle from the hallway, the mother rushed to the room and swung the door open. Confronted by his ex-girlfriend, Echoles fled the apartment, leaving behind a horrific scene. The mother discovered her young son bleeding and unresponsive, bearing devastating wounds to his head, neck, and arms.

While police and paramedics fought to save the dying child, the suspect’s post-attack behavior painted a chilling picture of detachment. Rather than fleeing the state or hiding, Echoles allegedly walked to a nearby Taco Bell, where officers quickly located and arrested him without further incident. The Pineville Police Department confirmed that the slaying was a deeply personal, domestic tragedy rather than a random act of community violence. Yet, a clear motive for why a father would turn so savagely on his own young son remains dangerously elusive, leaving investigators and grieving relatives with agonizing, unanswered questions.

As the community grapples with the shock of the crime, details of Echoles’ violent past have begun to surface, revealing a pattern of behavior that many fear was a ticking time bomb. The 31-year-old was already well-known to the local justice system, harboring a criminal history marked by repeated domestic abuse. In October 2020, he was convicted in North Carolina of assaulting a woman, and he currently has multiple other assault cases actively moving through the court system. His documented hostility toward women had only escalated in the months leading up to the tragedy, signaling a dangerous trajectory that went tragically uninterrupted.

Indeed, Echoles had already been accused of two separate assaults on women this year alone. In one active case, he allegedly beat a woman with a belt, and in another, he reportedly threw a set of keys at a woman after refusing to return a car he had borrowed. These escalating incidents paint a portrait of a volatile individual with a history of using physical dominance to terrorize those closest to him. Neighbors and community members are now left wondering how a man with such a volatile track record was still free to walk the streets, ultimately leading to the preventable death of an innocent five-year-old boy.

Currently, Echoles is being held without bond at the Mecklenburg County Jail, facing a charge of first-degree murder. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 30, where prosecutors will begin the long process of seeking justice for the young victim. Meanwhile, the boy’s mother and surviving sibling, though physically unharmed during the targeted attack, are left to process an unbearable loss. As the legal system prepares to hold the suspect accountable, a grieving family and a shaken North Carolina town are left to pick up the pieces of a life stolen far too soon.
