The tranquility of a Monday evening in Frisco, Texas, was shattered by a brutal act of violence against a Lyft driver, leaving him with severe injuries and highlighting the inherent risks faced by ride-sharing drivers. Dilaver Berk, a 25-year-old immigrant from Turkey, was diligently working his shift, providing transportation services through the Lyft platform, when he picked up a passenger later identified as 19-year-old Antwain Williams. What began as a routine fare quickly devolved into a nightmare for Berk as he neared Williams’ designated drop-off point at the Legends at Legacy Apartments on Legacy Drive. Unbeknownst to Berk, Williams harbored violent intentions, transforming the seemingly ordinary ride into a scene of terror.

As Berk pulled into the apartment complex parking lot, Williams launched a surprise attack from the back seat. Armed with a knife, Williams slashed at Berk’s throat multiple times, inflicting deep lacerations that would later require numerous stitches. Berk instinctively raised his hands to protect himself, resulting in severe gashes to his fingers as the blade sliced through his flesh. The assault didn’t end there. Williams then attempted to strangle Berk using a cable or wire, further escalating the brutality of the attack. Despite the life-threatening situation, Berk pleaded with his assailant, offering him anything he wanted in exchange for his safety, but his pleas went unanswered as Williams continued his violent assault.

Amidst the chaos and terror, Berk’s survival instincts kicked in. He fought back against his attacker, managing to deflect some of the blows and preventing the strangulation attempt from being fully successful. His resilience in the face of such extreme violence undoubtedly saved his life. Following the brutal assault, Williams stole Berk’s Toyota Camry, leaving the gravely injured driver bleeding in the parking lot. A nearby witness, witnessing the aftermath of the attack, rushed to Berk’s aid and immediately called 911, alerting authorities to the horrific crime.

The Frisco Police Department swiftly responded to the scene, launching an investigation and initiating a search for the stolen vehicle and the suspect. Hours later, a patrol officer located Berk’s stolen Camry near Highway 423 and Rockhill. Upon attempting to stop the vehicle, Williams initiated a high-speed chase, attempting to evade capture. The pursuit culminated in a crash, after which Williams attempted to flee on foot, but he was ultimately apprehended by law enforcement. Williams was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and evading arrest. Further investigation also revealed an outstanding warrant for Williams on charges of encouraging a child to perform a sex act, adding another layer of gravity to the case.

This incident casts a harsh spotlight on the vulnerabilities faced by ride-sharing drivers, who often operate alone and in unfamiliar environments. Berk, a recent immigrant who moved to Texas from Turkey just last year, was working hard to support himself and send money back home to his family. His story resonates with the countless other drivers who rely on ride-sharing platforms for their livelihood, often facing precarious working conditions and the potential for unforeseen dangers. The attack on Berk serves as a stark reminder of the risks inherent in the gig economy and the need for enhanced safety measures to protect drivers from such violent encounters.

The attack left Berk with significant physical and emotional trauma. While he has since been released from the hospital, he remains bedridden, recovering from his injuries. Despite the ordeal, Berk expresses gratitude for his survival and the support he has received from friends and the community. His friend, Dustin Tovi, described Berk as a hardworking individual who did not deserve such a brutal attack. Tovi’s words echo the sentiments of many who have been touched by Berk’s story, highlighting the senselessness of the violence and the impact it has had on his life. The incident underscores the importance of community support and the need for ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals, particularly those who provide essential services like ride-sharing drivers.
