To crown the city’s ultimate fry king, festival organizers painstakingly curated a lineup of ten of Los Angeles’ most celebrated food trucks and vendors. The selection process was no small feat, focusing on exceptional flavor profiles, stellar community ratings, and passionate local followings. Ultimately, the monumental task of tasting and judging these carbohydrate masterpieces fell upon the shoulders of producer and self-proclaimed fry connoisseur, Steve Nevills. For Nevills, this was more than just a fun weekend assignment; it was a lifelong passion. Ever since his mother fed him a french fry as his very first solid food, he has been on a personal quest to find the world’s most innovative spuds, making him the perfect advocate to evaluate LA’s finest.

Nevills approached his judging duties with the seriousness of a seasoned Michelin inspector, looking for that elusive harmony of texture, flavor, and culinary creativity. After much deliberation, the coveted title of Best Overall Fry was proudly awarded to The Chick Truck. Their winning entry feature a base of perfectly golden, structurally sound waffle fries, generously piled high with crispy buffalo chicken and rich blue cheese crumbles. The dish was a sensory triumph from the very start, captivating Nevills with an incredible savory aroma before he even took his first bite. The juxtaposition of the crunchy, spicy chicken with the cooling, tangy blue cheese created a beautifully balanced masterpiece that redefined what loaded fries could be.

While The Chick Truck claimed the crown, the competition was fierce, and the runner-up spot went to an incredibly inventive vendor aptly named Everyday is Fryday. They captivated the judges with their bold mango-habanero fries, which married sweet tropical fruitiness with a slow, fiery kick. It was a risky flavor combination that paid off brilliantly, showcasing how chefs are pushing the boundaries of traditional street food. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the highly competitive award for Best Plain Basic Fry went to Frylicious. Proving that simplicity is often the ultimate sophistication, Frylicious nailed the perfect golden ratio: flawlessly crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside, and sliced to the perfect medium thickness to act as the ultimate vessel for dipping.

This festival highlighted a much larger shift happening across the Golden State’s dynamic culinary landscape. Food trends in California are constantly adapting, and right now, the modest potato is undergoing a massive gourmet renaissance. Chefs are increasingly treating fries as an open canvas, experimenting with premium ingredients, regional spices, and global flavor profiles.
