The appeal of these alternative social gatherings extends beyond just avoiding hangovers. Participants in Eyre’s ice bath sessions—usually between 100 to 150 people per event—gain numerous health benefits, particularly when they manage to stay submerged in the frigid water for the recommended two and a half minutes. “It’s good for your inflammation, it’s good for your circulation,” Eyre explains, but perhaps more significantly, she emphasizes the mental health advantages that keep her personally returning to the practice. This focus on holistic wellbeing aligns perfectly with Gen Z’s values, where physical and mental health are prioritized over the temporary escape that alcohol might provide. The communal aspect of these activities creates a sense of shared experience and accomplishment that drinking at a bar simply cannot replicate.

This movement away from alcohol-centered socializing is backed by compelling data: 61% of Gen Zers express a desire to reduce their alcohol consumption. This statistic reveals that what we’re witnessing isn’t merely a passing “sober curious” phase but rather a fundamental cultural shift in how younger Americans view social interaction and personal wellbeing. The priorities have clearly changed, with mental health, quality sleep, and physical fitness taking precedence over the traditional drinking culture that dominated previous generations’ social lives. Eventbrite, a popular event ticketing platform, reports a staggering 92% increase in sober gatherings, demonstrating the economic viability of this wellness-focused approach to socializing. Entrepreneurs and event organizers are creatively filling this demand by designing experiences that combine elements of traditional nightlife—music, dancing, and social interaction—with wellness activities, daytime scheduling, and alcohol-free environments. Coffee shops transform into daytime dance venues; yoga studios expand into community hubs; and wellness practices like ice baths become group social events rather than solitary health routines. This fusion creates something entirely new: a social scene that energizes rather than depletes, that builds genuine community connections rather than superficial interactions forgotten by morning.

For people like Hannah Eyre, this evolution represents an exciting new frontier in how we connect with one another. “It’s nice to get to see more and more opportunities for connection beyond drinking or being at the bar,” she observes, capturing the sentiment of a generation seeking more authentic ways to build community.
