Three seasoned entrepreneurs have joined forces to create Alertmouse, a Seattle-based startup designed to fill a crucial gap in the digital monitoring landscape. The platform generates customized email alerts when users or brands are mentioned online, offering a much-needed alternative to existing tools like Google Alerts, which the founders bluntly describe as “so bad it might as well not exist.” This venture brings together the complementary talents of Rand Fishkin (former Moz founder, current CEO of SparkToro and Snackbar Studio), Adam Doppelt (co-founder of Urbanspoon and Dwellable), and Nathan Kriege (from Blueprint AI and Fresh Chalk)—all established figures in Seattle’s tech ecosystem with impressive track records of successful ventures.

The creation of Alertmouse stems from personal frustration, particularly Fishkin’s, with existing monitoring tools. In a LinkedIn announcement, Fishkin explained that while this new venture has evolved into a full business, it remains a side project that doesn’t detract from his other professional commitments. “It doesn’t take a ton of my time but it has been really fun to build this thing that I desperately needed,” he shared in a video, detailing how Google Alerts consistently falls short by missing important mentions while sending irrelevant notifications. For professionals like Fishkin, tracking mentions of oneself or one’s companies—whether in news articles or social media discussions—provides essential opportunities to monitor public perception and engage when necessary.

The technical approach of Alertmouse is refreshingly straightforward in an era dominated by AI hype. The service scans indexed websites multiple times daily for user-specified terms, phrases, or rules, then delivers email notifications when matches are found. “It’s not rocket science,” the company admits in its FAQ, “but it takes a lot of clever programming, testing, and iteration to make a good alert service.” This transparency about their approach reflects the founders’ commitment to solving a real problem with practical technology rather than jumping on trending buzzwords. As Fishkin humorously noted, “We wanted to make a brand that no one could confuse for AI. This is not an AI company. There’s going to be no venture capital, there’s no AI under the hood. It’s just really simple, straightforward, fun, delightful humans.”

While enterprise-level monitoring tools like Mentioned, Hootsuite, and Brandwatch offer similar functionality, their significant costs put them out of reach for many individuals and smaller organizations. Alertmouse bridges this gap with a tiered pricing structure designed to accommodate various needs and budgets, playfully named with cheese-themed tiers: Nibble (free), Slice ($120/year), Wedge ($600/year), and Wheel ($1,200/year). The approachable pricing, combined with a user-friendly interface and deliberately lighthearted branding, appears to resonate with users—the service attracted an impressive 1,000 sign-ups within hours of launching. The founders’ decision to embrace a whimsical, mouse-themed aesthetic with cheese-related terminology throughout their website demonstrates their understanding that even utilitarian tools can benefit from personality and approachability.

The founders bring complementary backgrounds to Alertmouse, with each having previously developed successful digital products. Fishkin is renowned in the SEO and marketing world from his time leading Moz before co-founding SparkToro, an audience research tool, and recently raising $2.15 million for his independent game studio, Snackbar Studio. Doppelt and Kriege share a history of collaboration across multiple ventures, including vacation rental startup Dwellable (which they sold to HomeAway), professional recommendation site Fresh Chalk, task management platform Blueprint AI, and even a resource website dedicated to smoke detectors. Beyond their professional connections, the founders share personal bonds as well—Fishkin and Doppelt regularly participate in Dungeons & Dragons gaming sessions together, suggesting a foundation of trust and camaraderie that strengthens their business partnership.

While the Alertmouse website initially stated no plans to hire additional team members, the overwhelming initial response has already prompted the founders to reconsider this position. “If it keeps going like this we might have to bring someone on,” Fishkin acknowledged after receiving numerous inquiries on launch day. This rapid reassessment highlights both the enthusiastic market reception and the founders’ adaptability. Their approach exemplifies a growing trend of experienced entrepreneurs creating focused, self-funded solutions to specific problems they’ve personally encountered, rather than chasing venture funding or attempting to disrupt entire industries. Alertmouse represents a return to fundamentals: identifying a clear need, developing a straightforward solution, and delivering it with personality and precision—a refreshing counterpoint to the hype-driven startups that often dominate tech headlines.
