Jay Cutler’s Brief Jail Stint Following DUI Plea Deal
Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has completed a shortened jail sentence as part of his recent DUI plea agreement. Cutler, who was initially sentenced to four days in a Williamson County, Tennessee jail, was released after serving just three days from Monday to Wednesday of this week.
The legal situation stems from an incident last October in Franklin, Tennessee, where Cutler allegedly rear-ended another vehicle. When police arrived on the scene, they reported that the former NFL star was slurring his speech and refused to participate in field sobriety tests, leading officers to obtain a warrant for a blood sample at a local hospital. During the arrest, authorities discovered both a rifle and a loaded pistol in the center console of Cutler’s truck, adding weapons charges to his case. Initially, Cutler faced multiple charges including DUI, failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision, implied consent violation, and possession of a handgun while under the influence.
Last month, Cutler reached a plea agreement with prosecutors, agreeing to plead guilty to the DUI charge while the other charges were dismissed. As part of the deal, Cutler was required to forfeit his gun and has now had his driver’s license revoked. Moving forward, the former quarterback must complete a DUI safety class, serve one year of unsupervised probation, and pay a $350 fine as he puts this legal chapter behind him.
Cutler’s NFL career began with the Denver Broncos, where he played 37 games from 2006 to 2008 before being traded to the Chicago Bears. It was in Chicago where Cutler made his most significant impact, becoming the face of the franchise for eight seasons. During his time with the Bears, he threw for 23,443 yards and 154 touchdowns across 102 regular-season games. Despite his individual statistical success, team accomplishments were harder to come by, with the Bears reaching the playoffs only once under Cutler’s leadership in 2010, when they advanced to the NFC Championship Game before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers.
After leaving Chicago, Cutler briefly retired before returning for a final NFL season with the Miami Dolphins in 2017. His career totals stand at 35,133 passing yards and 160 touchdowns over 153 games. Though often criticized for his demeanor and inconsistent play during his playing days, Cutler remains one of the most statistically successful quarterbacks in Bears franchise history, holding numerous team passing records despite the team’s limited success during his tenure.
Since retiring from football, Cutler has maintained a public profile through various ventures, including a reality television appearance alongside his ex-wife Kristin Cavallari on their show “Very Cavallari,” podcast appearances, and business interests. This recent legal trouble represents a setback for the former NFL star as he continues to navigate life after football. As this legal matter concludes with his release from jail, Cutler will likely focus on fulfilling the remaining requirements of his plea deal while attempting to move forward from this unfortunate incident.
