Trail camera footage captured him armed with an AR-15-style rifle, and investigators found his truck abandoned nearby. There were already troubling signs of potential domestic issues—the ex-girlfriend had previously experienced having her pickup truck set on fire in August, though she hadn’t been certain Ruth was responsible and had asked police not to investigate at that time. As officers entered through an unlocked front door just after 2 p.m., Ruth unleashed a barrage of gunfire with a suppressed weapon, catching the officers by surprise.
