The astronauts return to Earth
The astronauts, Bych Wilmore and Suni Williams, were on the International Space Station (ISS) from June 1 to late May, with their mission scheduled to last only one week upon their return. However, due to unfavorable weather conditions, NASA had to bring the Boeing Starliner back from the ISS empty. This forced the crew to adjust their return deadline, with the mission now scheduled to happen Tuesday at 1:05 a.m. Eastern Standard Time (ET). The crew will splash down just before 6 p.m. ET on the same day.
The updated return target allows the crew to complete their handover duties while providing operational flexibility for the less favorable weather conditions expected later in the week. NASA stated that the scenario presents a good opportunity to address contingency issues such as crew shortages and other unexpected challenges.
