Chaotic Airport Incident: Woman Attempts to Abduct Child at Miami International

A disturbing incident unfolded at Miami International Airport early Tuesday morning, creating a scene of confusion and fear when a 23-year-old British woman allegedly attempted to take a child from his mother. The event, which quickly escalated from an apparent offer of help to a frightening custody struggle, highlights the vulnerability of families in busy transit hubs and the swift response of bystanders and authorities during a potential abduction situation.

The incident began when Alvina Omisiri Agba approached a mother who was standing in line at an airport checkpoint with her crying 4-year-old son. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office report, Agba initially offered to help soothe the distressed child. What seemed like a kind gesture from a stranger quickly turned alarming when, after picking up the boy, Agba walked away from the checkpoint line, separating the child from his mother. When the concerned mother followed and requested her son back, Agba reportedly refused, claiming, “No, this is my child.” The situation then escalated physically as Agba wrapped her arms and legs around the boy to prevent him from being taken back, creating a deeply troubling scene in the busy airport terminal.

What followed was a tense struggle that drew the attention of nearby travelers. When the child’s mother attempted to retrieve her son, Agba allegedly pushed her away and grabbed the boy’s leg, refusing to release him. The commotion attracted the attention of a witness, Naylet Montano, who intervened in the chaotic situation. Recognizing the danger to the child caught in the physical struggle, Montano managed to take hold of the boy and moved behind a counter for protection. Even then, Agba reportedly followed, continuing to shout demands that “her child” be returned to her. The situation was only contained when three men positioned themselves between Agba and Montano, creating a human barrier that prevented further pursuit of the child.

After this intervention, Agba fled the immediate area but was later apprehended by airport security personnel at another checkpoint within the facility. Following her arrest, she offered a perplexing explanation for her actions. According to the sheriff’s report, Agba told deputies that she remembered seeing a wall with a rainbow on it and thought it would help calm the crying child. Her recollection of events appeared fragmented, as she acknowledged remembering the mother attempting to take back the child but claimed she “did not remember what happened after that.” Perhaps most concerning was her statement that she “only did it because God told her to do it,” suggesting potential mental health concerns. Authorities noted that Agba was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident, adding another layer of complexity to understanding her motivations.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office has charged Agba with interference with custody and two counts of battery. This case bears similarities to other recent incidents at airports and public spaces where children have been targeted by strangers. Just months ago, surveillance footage captured a 26-year-old man attempting to abduct a toddler from a mall play area, and in another troubling incident, parents abandoned their 10-year-old son at Barcelona Airport to avoid missing their flight. These cases collectively underscore the vulnerability of children in public spaces and the importance of vigilance by parents, bystanders, and security personnel.

This incident at Miami International Airport serves as a stark reminder of how quickly ordinary situations can transform into potentially dangerous ones, especially in crowded public spaces where families may be distracted or stressed by travel. The quick thinking of the mother, the intervention of concerned bystanders, and the prompt response by airport security likely prevented what could have been a successful abduction attempt. While the suspect’s motives remain unclear and possibly related to mental health issues, the case highlights the critical importance of public awareness and rapid response protocols in public transportation hubs. Miami International Airport has directed all inquiries about the incident to the sheriff’s office, which continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this alarming event that fortunately ended with the child safely reunited with his mother.
