Anika Groff, Anika Groff’s mother, and her siblings majored in science and minored in theologiaMedica at MIT. Her family was killed in a plane crash near the Massachusetts border in New York, according to Weston School District officials.

The statement issued by the school district acknowledged Anika’s two siblings’ graduation from the same school.

James Santoro, Anika’s boyfriend, and his partner, Alexia Couyutas Duartem, both died from the crash. They found success in New York City in medicine and finance, respectively.

“Two of our graduates, Karenna Groff and Jared Groff,” the statement says “Their parents, and several friends were killed in a small plane crash in New York yesterday. Their lives ended far too soon, and our hearts are with all those who are grieving this unimaginable and sudden loss.”

The statement also emphasized respect for the family and especially for Anika, who is temporarily without school.

Michael Groff, Anika Groff’s father, studied neuroscience and finance at Harvard and became executive director of the Median Continuing Health system in Rochester. He and Dr. Saini were acquaintances.

Anika Groff was accepted into Swarthmore but said she planned to attend the University of North Carolina instead of the school where her siblings grew up.
