Chaotic Day in California: Fatal Stabbing and Ambulance Theft Shock Local Community

In a series of dramatic events that unfolded in Downey, California, a community was left reeling after a fatal stabbing was followed by the theft of an ambulance responding to the scene. The incident, which began at the Downey City Library, resulted in one death and two arrests in separate but connected incidents that paint a troubling picture of public safety challenges. What started as a violent altercation between two men escalated into a chaotic scene that spread across multiple communities and involved a high-speed pursuit, ultimately concluding miles away with the capture of both suspects.

The initial tragedy occurred Saturday morning at the Downey City Library, where witnesses reported seeing a bloody confrontation near an EV charging station. According to police reports, a 23-year-old homeless man allegedly stabbed another man in the neck in a violent attack. First responders arrived quickly at the scene, but were unable to save the victim, who succumbed to his injuries at the library. While paramedics were attending to the stabbing victim, an unexpected and alarming secondary incident began to unfold. The stabbing suspect fled the scene on foot toward a nearby high school, where police would later apprehend him. Meanwhile, as emergency personnel were focused on the stabbing victim, a 52-year-old man—completely unrelated to the initial homicide—seized an opportunity to steal the parked ambulance.

The theft of the emergency vehicle triggered an immediate response from law enforcement, creating a surreal scene as a half-dressed man commandeered an ambulance with its lights and sirens still active. Witnesses at the scene captured video of the beginning of the pursuit, with one woman heard yelling, “He’s stealing the ambulance!” as the vehicle sped away from the library parking lot. Police officers responded quickly, both on foot and in patrol vehicles, initiating what would become a 10-mile chase through the streets of Los Angeles County. The pursuit drew considerable attention from bystanders and created additional public safety concerns as the stolen emergency vehicle moved at high speeds through populated areas.

The ambulance theft ended dramatically in the neighboring city of Alhambra when the 52-year-old suspect crashed the emergency vehicle into a parked car. The collision disabled the ambulance and allowed police to close in on the suspect. Video footage of the arrest revealed a bizarre scene as officers apprehended the man, whose pants had fallen down around his ankles, leaving him in just his underwear as he was taken into custody. Officers had to dress the man before placing him in a police vehicle, adding another unusual element to an already extraordinary series of events. Throughout the arrest, witnesses described the man as continuously “screaming,” creating a disturbing spectacle for onlookers in the Alhambra neighborhood where the chase concluded.

Local resident Alan Kwong, who witnessed the arrest, told KABC news that the man’s erratic behavior continued well after he was apprehended. “When I came back, he was still screaming. He’s still screaming in the car, in the police SUV, right now, even right now,” Kwong reported, suggesting the suspect may have been experiencing a mental health crisis or was under the influence of substances. The behavior of the ambulance thief, described as a “madman” and “unhinged” by various reports, raises questions about mental health response and crisis intervention in the community. Meanwhile, back in Downey, police successfully apprehended the stabbing suspect near a local high school after he attempted to flee the scene of the homicide on foot.

As of the latest reports, both the homicide suspect and the ambulance thief remain in police custody, though authorities have not yet released the names of either man. The Downey Police Department confirmed in an official statement that the ambulance theft was completely “unrelated to the homicide investigation,” highlighting the unusual coincidence of two serious crimes occurring in such close proximity. The day’s events have left the community shaken, with residents expressing concern about public safety at a popular community location like the city library. The incident also underscores the challenges faced by emergency responders who must sometimes contend with unexpected threats even as they work to save lives. As investigations into both the fatal stabbing and the ambulance theft continue, local authorities will be working to piece together the full circumstances surrounding this extraordinary day of crime in Los Angeles County.
