The 2024 Christmas party hosted by Candlelighters NYC Childhood Cancer Foundation brought a wave of festive cheer and much-needed respite to dozens of families grappling with the challenges of childhood cancer. The NYPD’s 86th Precinct, transformed into a winter wonderland, resonated with Christmas carols and the delighted laughter of children. From exhilarating rides in NYPD motorcycle sidecars around Central Park to the captivating presence of FDNY members dressed as superheroes, the event provided a magical escape from the realities of treatment and recovery.

For the families present, many of whom were actively battling or had previously fought cancer, Candlelighters has served as an invaluable lifeline. The foundation provides not only practical support but also a sense of community and shared understanding during a profoundly challenging time. Seventeen-year-old Joseph Maroney, a leukemia survivor, spoke to the profound impact of Candlelighters, describing it as “another family.” His journey, from diagnosis at age six to remission in 2014 following a bone marrow transplant, highlighted the arduous struggle with the disease and the subsequent journey of recovery, including relearning to walk. His parents echoed his sentiments, expressing gratitude for the support they received from Candlelighters, which they found online after Joseph’s diagnosis. Now, years into remission, the Maroney family actively participates in events like the Christmas party, seeking to provide support and encouragement to other families facing similar battles.

Rachel and Ryan Wilson, along with their two daughters, Giuliana and Giovanna, also shared their story of resilience and the crucial role Candlelighters played in their lives. Giovanna, diagnosed with neuroblastoma at just eight-and-a-half months old, achieved remission in 2019 after seeking treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The family’s relocation from Kansas City to the Upper East Side underscored their commitment to seeking the best possible care for their daughter. Now deeply involved with Candlelighters, Rachel serves as the organization’s vice president, playing a key role in organizing events like the Christmas party. Ryan emphasized the transformative impact of Candlelighters, describing how it provided a sense of belonging and support during a tumultuous period.

For Giovanna, the Christmas party represented a joyful occasion to connect with other children who shared similar experiences. Her recounting of the day’s highlights, from the motorcycle sidecar ride to the magician and the presence of Santa, captured the childlike wonder and excitement that permeated the event. The opportunity to explore an ambulance and witness the arrival of police officers on motorcycles, culminating in Santa’s grand entrance in an NYPD squad car, added to the festive atmosphere. These experiences provided a welcome distraction from the challenges of treatment and fostered a sense of normalcy and joy.

The culmination of the event was the highly anticipated arrival of Santa Claus, escorted by a motorcade of highway patrol motorcycles and arriving in style in an NYPD squad car. This grand entrance brought a sense of magic and excitement to the children, reinforcing the spirit of Christmas and creating a memorable experience. The event exemplified the spirit of giving and community support, bringing moments of joy and respite to families facing difficult circumstances.

For the NYPD, the Christmas party represents an opportunity to connect with the community and bring holiday cheer to families facing hardship. Officer Luis Moreira emphasized the importance of providing a positive Christmas experience for these children, offering a moment of respite from the struggles they face. This sentiment highlights the broader impact of the event, extending beyond the immediate joy and creating lasting memories for the families involved.

The driving force behind Candlelighters is Barbara Zobian, who founded the organization 17 years ago. Her vision of providing support and a sense of family to families traveling to New York for cancer treatment has become a reality through the dedicated efforts of Candlelighters. The Christmas party stands as a testament to the organization’s unwavering commitment to supporting families throughout their cancer journey, offering not only practical assistance but also a sense of belonging and shared understanding during a challenging time. The event’s success embodies the spirit of community and the power of collective support in making a positive impact on the lives of children and families affected by cancer.
