Additionally, matcha’s relatively high caffeine content – up to 80 milligrams in a typical serving – could be another contributing factor. Amy Shapiro, founder of Real Nutrition, points out that substantial caffeine intake can elevate stress hormones, which may trigger temporary hair shedding in susceptible individuals.

Before you panic and pour your precious matcha down the drain, it’s worth noting that moderation appears to be key. “One to two servings per day is unlikely to cause hair loss for the average person,” Shapiro reassures. The risk primarily affects those who already have compromised iron levels or anemia, including individuals with heavy menstrual periods, certain gastrointestinal conditions, or those following strict vegan diets without proper iron supplementation. People consuming extremely large quantities of matcha daily or taking concentrated green tea extract supplements also face increased risk. Rather than guessing, Shapiro recommends checking iron levels through proper laboratory testing if hair loss becomes a concern. This measured approach allows most people to enjoy their matcha without unnecessary worry while giving those at higher risk the information they need to make informed decisions.

For matcha enthusiasts concerned about preserving both their hair health and their beloved beverage, simple dietary adjustments can make a significant difference. If you suspect low iron levels, Schiff recommends avoiding matcha consumption immediately before, during, or shortly after eating plant-based iron sources like spinach, white beans, or tofu. Animal-based iron sources appear less affected by this interaction. Shapiro suggests a clever nutritional strategy: pairing plant-based iron foods with vitamin C-rich options such as citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, or brussels sprouts. “Vitamin C dramatically improves non-heme iron absorption and can effectively counteract the effects of tannins,” she explains. Another important precaution involves avoiding high-dose green tea extracts or supplements unless medically prescribed, as these concentrated forms carry a substantially higher risk of side effects than the beverage itself. For those experiencing hair loss, Shapiro emphasizes the importance of considering other common causes, including thyroid disorders, stress, and medication side effects, as matcha represents just one potential contributor among many.

Beyond potential hair concerns, matcha consumption carries other considerations worth understanding. Some individuals experience digestive discomfort, including nausea or indigestion, likely attributable to those same tannins that can affect iron absorption. The caffeine content, though less than coffee, may still trigger insomnia, jitteriness, heart palpitations, anxiety, or elevated blood pressure in sensitive people when consumed excessively. In rare cases, heavy green tea consumption has been associated with liver enzyme elevations and liver injury, typically related to high concentrations of the antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). This risk is particularly pronounced with concentrated supplements, especially when taken on an empty stomach. Symptoms of liver issues may include jaundice, nausea, and abdominal pain, though Shapiro notes that the damage is usually reversible once consumption stops. These potential side effects underscore the importance of mindful consumption and listening to your body’s response.

The EGCG content in matcha deserves special mention, as Schiff notes it helps neutralize harmful free radicals, potentially lowering risk factors for chronic conditions like heart disease. “Matcha contains three or more times the EGCG of regular green tea,” she adds, highlighting its concentrated nature. Research also suggests matcha consumption may improve insulin sensitivity, benefiting those with pre-diabetes or diabetes by helping to lower blood sugar levels. Some studies even indicate potential weight management benefits, with matcha potentially decreasing appetite while increasing metabolism.
