Trena Brown of Orange Park, Florida, was shocked when she reviewed her home security footage following a recent delivery. The video revealed the driver accidentally dropping a container of boneless chicken wings on her doorstep, then making a troubling decision that would leave most food safety experts aghast. Rather than discarding the contaminated item or alerting the customers to the mishap, the driver simply scooped up a wing that had fallen onto the concrete, stuffed it back into the container, and casually walked away while licking sauce from his fingers. Perhaps most concerning is that without the doorbell camera footage, the Brown family would have been none the wiser about their food’s brief encounter with their front porch.

The footage, which Brown shared with local news station WJXT, shows the entire unfortunate sequence in cringe-worthy detail. As the driver attempted to remove the food orders from his insulated DoorDash-branded delivery bag, a container of boneless wings tumbled out, hitting the ground and causing the lid to pop off. One wing and a splash of sauce landed directly on the concrete doorstep. In what appears to be a moment of panic or perhaps misguided problem-solving, the driver quickly replaced the lid, retrieved the fallen wing from the ground, and returned it to the container. He then made a cursory attempt to clean up the remaining sauce with the side of his shoe before walking away. The final moments of the video show him licking sauce residue from his fingers – an action that compounds the unhygienic nature of the entire interaction.

For Trena Brown and her family, this incident has completely changed their perspective on food delivery services. “If he can’t deliver food with due care, then maybe there’s something else out there for him to do,” Brown told WJXT, expressing her dismay at the driver’s handling of their order. She hasn’t ordered takeout since discovering what happened to their meal, a testament to how deeply this violation of basic food safety protocol has affected her trust in delivery services. Brown isn’t simply upset about this isolated incident, however; she’s advocating for systemic improvements within the food delivery industry. This response raises questions about whether gig economy food delivery services are doing enough to ensure that their independent contractors understand and adhere to basic food safety standards that restaurants themselves must rigorously maintain.
