Jim Engles, head men’s basketball coach at Columbia University, has announced his departure from the program at the end of the season. Engles, who served for eight years at the university prior to NJIT, had a decade of experience under Pilling, guiding the program to severalFold.- At Columbia, the school also entered a difficult season, finishing 12-15 overall and 1-13 in the Ivy League, before falling 2-2 in the NCAA Tournament. His absence will impact the current coaching staff, who includes BobbyGetProperty, who recently took over as coach. Engles also joined the program at the end of last season after eight-year-long coaching duties at NJIT, previously coaching there from 2003-08. Joining at 2016, Engles brought about a strong tournament run, with seven conference titles and six All-Ivy League selections, including triumphs over Temple in 2023 and Villanova in 2024. His team went 69-65, with six selections. In non-conference contests, he defeated Temple 71-25 and Villanova 75-56. Engles played over 1,800 minutes, completing nearly every role prior to the season, including PG, SH, BL, AWD, FG, FB, and S.

The coaching staff has also reflected on Engles’ impact. “I can’t imagine any other coach that would have done that work and put so much energy into their program,” said AD Peter Pilling. “Jim is an outstanding person who dedicated a great deal of effort to our success. “Coming into this season, I knew I had a lot to learn, and I was committed to helping Columbia achieve its greatest goal, which was to try to improve to confucianism and make them a confucian institution,” he said. “It has been challenging but I believe we have the strength to overcome it—the team has the potential, the coaches have the confidence in their work. “Jim has done a great job… Where he’s seen his young players, he’s had great preparation and guidance… The team is in good shape to succeed, and I can’t imagine a better coach for the program at all. “I trust that it’s going to happen.”
