Josef Newgarden Makes History with Back-to-Back Indianapolis 500 Wins
In a stunning display of talent and determination, Josef Newgarden secured his place in racing history by winning the Indianapolis 500 for the second consecutive year on May 26, 2024. This remarkable achievement places Newgarden alongside legendary drivers like Wilbur Shaw, Mauri Rose, Bill Vukovich, Al Unser, and Helio Castroneves, all of whom have previously clinched victories at the world-renowned race in back-to-back years. This year’s victory also marks the 20th Indy 500 win for Team Penske, reinforcing the team’s dominance in this prestigious event.
Following his extraordinary win, Newgarden was honored at a special ceremony held at COhatch Polk Stables in downtown Indianapolis, where his face was unveiled as the latest addition to the illustrious Borg-Warner Trophy. The trophy has been awarded annually since 1936 and features the likeness of every Indy 500 winner. Newgarden expressed his excitement at joining such an exclusive group of repeat winners, stating, “Seeing the finished product, with two side-by-side images of my face, is an unbelievable honor.” He highlighted his hope of adding yet another likeness in the future, aiming for a historic third consecutive win.
The Borg-Warner Trophy, now featuring Newgarden’s face cast in sterling silver, has become a symbol of automotive excellence. Renowned sculptor Will Behrends, who has crafted the likenesses of winners since 1990, meticulously creates each face as a unique representation of the winner. Although normally Newgarden would have participated in an in-person modeling session at Behrends’ studio in Tryon, North Carolina, this year’s live study was canceled due to the impact of Hurricane Helene. Nevertheless, Behrends adapted his process using a series of photographs to accurately capture Newgarden’s likeness.
This year’s unveiling was particularly significant as Newgarden became the first driver since Helio Castroneves to secure back-to-back victories in the Indianapolis 500, having driven the No. 2 Shell Team Penske Chevrolet to victory. “Today is a special day for Josef and BorgWarner,” remarked Michelle Collins, the Global Director of Marketing and Public Relations for BorgWarner. She praised Newgarden’s achievements and affirmed the trophy’s role in celebrating excellence not just in IndyCar racing but in the broader scope of motorsports.
The Borg-Warner Trophy, a magnificent piece of art designed in 1935, stands over 5 feet tall and weighs more than 110 pounds, embodying the legacy and heritage of the Indianapolis 500. Each winner’s face is intricately crafted and symbolizes the hard work and skill required to conquer this grueling race. As part of his recognition, Newgarden will receive a miniature version of the trophy, known as the BorgWarner Championship Driver’s Trophy, early next year, further cementing his status as a racing champion.
Josef Newgarden’s consecutive wins not only highlight his individual talent and resolve but also the exceptional performance of Team Penske. With aspirations of further success, Newgarden’s eyes are set on becoming the first driver to achieve three consecutive Indianapolis 500 wins since the event’s inception, a feat that would secure his legacy among the greatest drivers in motorsport history.
