It is often said that accomplices come in all shapes and sizes, but few are as small, fluffy, and entirely involuntary as a three-month-old tuxedo kitten named Magnolia. In a bizarre sequence of events that unfolded in Maryland, a local man transformed a routine morning into a chaotic, headline-grabbing drama. The suspect allegedly snatched the kitten from a pet store adoption display and carried her straight into a neighboring bank. Moments later, in an baffling move that defied all criminal logic, he asked a bank employee to hold the tiny feline before handing the teller a robbery note demanding cash.
The strange incident began around 10:30 a.m. at a Pet Supplies Plus store on Baltimore Avenue, where Magnolia was being hosted by Beltsville Community Cats, a local rescue organization. Security footage captured a man in a light-colored T-shirt and a black beanie rushing into the store, grabbing the affectionate black-and-white kitten, and running out into the parking lot. Store manager Aaron Kurkowski later revealed that the suspect was a familiar face, having visited the store almost daily for weeks, always heading straight for Magnolia’s enclosure. On this particular morning, his routine took a sudden, frantic turn, prompting store employees to make a panicked call to the rescue group to report the kitten stolen.
Upon receiving the alert, Stephanie Stullich of Beltsville Community Cats rushed to the shopping center, only to find a massive, flashing wall of police cruisers. While she initially marveled at what she assumed was an incredibly enthusiastic police response for a stolen cat, she quickly realized the officers were actually descending upon the nearby PNC Bank. Inside the branch, the suspect’s bizarre plot had already unraveled. He had attempted to recruit a bank employee as a temporary pet-sitter so he could free up his hands to present his stick-up note.
Fortunately, the attempted heist was entirely unsuccessful. Prince George’s County police arrived at the scene almost immediately, taking the suspect into custody inside the bank lobby before any cash could be handed over. Amidst the tension and confusion of the arrest, Magnolia remained completely unfazed. Showing off her resilient and sweet nature, the kitten reportedly spent the duration of the police intervention bonding with the bank manager, who kept her safe, warm, and comforted until rescue volunteers could retrieve her.
Following the ordeal, Beltsville Community Cats took to Facebook to lightheartedly announce that Magnolia’s brief, involuntary “life of crime” was officially over. Described by her caretakers as a “true purr machine,” the resilient three-month-old tuxedo kitten returned to her foster home unscathed and ready to put her dramatic past behind her. Despite her brief stint as a bank robber’s sidekick, her loving, adventurous personality remained fully intact, and she quickly went back to her favorite activities: seeking out cuddles, playing, and shadow-following her humans.
As Magnolia continues her search for a forever home, the rescue group is hoping to find a family that can match her high energy and social personality. Because she is so playful, they recommend she be adopted into a home with another active young cat, or perhaps alongside another rescue feline. Outlining the perfect qualifications for her future owners, Stullich jokingly told reporters that the kitten is simply looking for a law-abiding citizen with a lot of love in their heart—and absolutely no plans to visit a bank.
