The suspect allegedly snatched the kitten from a pet store adoption display and carried her straight into a neighboring bank. Moments later, in an baffling move that defied all criminal logic, he asked a bank employee to hold the tiny feline before handing the teller a robbery note demanding cash.
The strange incident began around 10:30 a.m. at a Pet Supplies Plus store on Baltimore Avenue, where Magnolia was being hosted by Beltsville Community Cats, a local rescue organization. Security footage captured a man in a light-colored T-shirt and a black beanie rushing into the store, grabbing the affectionate black-and-white kitten, and running out into the parking lot. Store manager Aaron Kurkowski later revealed that the suspect was a familiar face, having visited the store almost daily for weeks, always heading straight for Magnolia’s enclosure. On this particular morning, his routine took a sudden, frantic turn, prompting store employees to make a panicked call to the rescue group to report the kitten stolen.
Upon receiving the alert, Stephanie Stullich of Beltsville Community Cats rushed to the shopping center, only to find a massive, flashing wall of police cruisers. While she initially marveled at what she assumed was an incredibly enthusiastic police response for a stolen cat, she quickly realized the officers were actually descending upon the nearby PNC Bank. Inside the branch, the suspect’s bizarre plot had already unraveled. He had attempted to recruit a bank employee as a temporary pet-sitter so he could free up his hands to present his stick-up note.
