The Battle for the Gymkhana: Inside the Government’s War on Delhi’s Elite Colonial-Era Club

Under the Canopy of Empire, a Modern Siege Begins

For over a century, the Delhi Gymkhana Club has stood as an insulated sanctuary of gravel paths, manicured grass courts, and whitewashed colonial bungalows, largely undisturbed by the chaotic transformation of the capital swirling outside its gates. Established in 1913 during the twilight of the British Raj, this premier institution was designed to offer imperial administrators a refined refuge to drink gin and tonics, play billiards, and deliberate on the governance of Britain’s most prized territory. Decades after the Union Jack was lowered, the club’s prestigious status endured, serving as the ultimate social playground for India’s bureaucratic elite, military top brass, and old-money dynasties. Yet today, this bastion of high society finds itself at the center of an aggressive regulatory and cultural offensive led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Labeling the club a decadent, exclusionary “vestige of colonialism” that has no place in a self-reliant, decolonized India, national authorities have initiated legal and administrative maneuvers to seize control of the enterprise. For the club’s members, however, this high-stakes campaign smells less like cultural liberation and more like a calculated, politically motivated land grab aimed at dismantling independent civic spaces.
